Astoria: The Museum of the Moving Image

This past weekend, I went with my parents and my boyfriend out to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens. Lots of cool exhibits there, including this one demonstrating the use of strobe lights to create the illusion of motion. Here you can see what the exhibit looks like in normal light (top) and with the strobe (bottom).

This past weekend I went up to Spokane, Washington for my cousin Joe’s wedding. While there I saw my grandmother who I hadn’t seen in years. She has some short term memory loss but is quite witty and a pleasure to hang out with. My family and I had a really nice time eating lunch with her in Manito Park, and I liked the post its she put on her cabinets.

Williamsburg Skies

I know most people in New York have seen some version of this photograph several times already; now you’ve seen mine. This was one of the most incredible skies I’d ever seen…as seen through the parking lot of Key Foods on Grand Street.

A little more from Guatemala…one more from Antigua (top, I had never seen plants growing on Telephone wires before) and El Lágo de Atitlán (bottom: I think this was the day I woke up really early and went out to take pictures before my boyfriend woke up). I put a few more on Flickr.

As some of you know, I just returned from a six day trip to Guatemala. My tour guide/old friend Emily showed us around and we were able to see some beautiful scenery: from the city of Antigua (an old colonial capital) to the Pacaya Volcano (one of many volcanos in the very seismically active country) to the peaceful Lago de Atitlán (where we at and drank and played monopoly). Very good times.

RIP: New York Look

lookissue2

Sadly, the magazine New York Look (alternately titled Look New York?) has been discontinued by its parent publication, New York Magazine.  In case you didn’t know, every issue of New York Look (a total of 3 I believe) featured the work of a different photographer (including Christopher Anderson, who was responsible for the above cover and is represented by Magnum). There was some really wonderful work in this publication, and to me it really stood out from other fashion magazines. The images were about lighting and forms and composition, not just celebrities and “fashionable” in-crowds.  It shall be missed. They still have a website up, and you can see some of the most recent images here.

Some really nice work here. I especially like the “Swim” section.

Over the past 7 weeks I have been taking a class in studio photography at Photo Manhattan, learning lighting setups and the principals of studio exposure. This is one of my shots from the final session; where we actually got to direct our own photo shoot with a  real model (previous subjects were all inanimate). It was amazing to see the difference some professional lighting can make in a photograph.
